I stepped toward him again, my fist clenched tightly, prepared to strike again.

“What does that mean? Where are they? What’s happened to them?” I roared, tears welling in my eyes.

Florian had backed into the centre of the room and tripped backwards over the hem of his absurdly large dress. His left hand propped his upper body off of the floor as he reached up towards me with his right, protecting himself from another blow. In his eyes I could see genuine fear.

“Not everyone is on our side, Ash!” he said, almost pleading. “When they passed through here I told them both that there are people who are secretly trying to help them! The problem is that the people who are assigned to handle Michael and Alina aren’t on our side. We can’t get to them. It’s different with you. We know who all of your handlers are going to be. They are with us.”
